Optimal nutrition comprises of Micro-nutrients and Macro-nutrients.
Micro-nutrients include vitamins, minerals, antioxidants including other compounds that we may need in small amounts.
Macro-nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins and fats which make up the bulk of our food.
To maintain lifelong health we need to adjust our nutrient intake with each stage of life. This is because there are factors that change, such as lifestyle and our working and living environment. This can contribute to nutritional requirements being needed well above RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) or RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). RDI’s / RDA’s had been set about to prevent deficiency diseases such as Scury (Vitamin C Deficiency), not the degenerative diseases that many people face today which require Optimal nutrition to address.
Our goal should be to provide our bodies with the optimal levels of nutrients to help maintain our health.
Its been said that maintaining minimal levels of nutrition is like living pay-cheque to pay-cheque. This saves nothing for difficult times or retirement. The body can’t store many important nutrients, such as antioxidants and vitamins, but maintaining optimal nutrition can help build valuable reserves of health and a strong immune system.
